Tips From Your Pediatric Clinic On Preventing Asthma Flare-Ups

By: Alaska Pediatric Surgery December 15, 2015 June 26, 2023

Here at Alaska Pediatric Surgery, we see a lot of children in our clinic who suffer from asthma and asthma-related issues. As a pediatric clinic in Anchorage, we want to help you mitigate your child’s asthma flare-ups. As you likely know, asthma is a complicated medical illness and flare-ups can arise seemingly out of nowhere. Today we’re going to give you a few tips on how to prevent your child’s next asthma flare-up.

  • Have a plan in place! When you have an asthma plan in place, you have a roadmap to better controlling the disease. A well-designed asthma plan will ensure that you routinely monitor your child’s asthma symptoms and that you take necessary steps before significant problems arise. You need to be able to understand the early warning signs of an asthma attack with your child, which medications you need to use and when, and what constitutes a visit to the emergency room. If you don’t already have a plan in place, we can help you develop one at your next visit.
  • Make sure your child takes their asthma medicine correctly and on a regular basis. When anyone – whether an adult or child – fails to regularly take their asthma medication, they’re decreasing the effectiveness of the asthma medication. Ask us to review your inhaler technique so that we can help provide your child with an appropriate inhaler education.
  • Are you a smoker? Even if you go outside to smoke, it’s likely still affecting your child. Smoking is one of the biggest triggers that increase asthma symptoms and attacks in children. We know that quitting isn’t easy, but it’s in your child’s (and your) best interest that you do so.
